Dyad 3 Project:
Purpose: How might I use technology to help students research, write and present a multi-media presentation?

English Language Arts Standards » Grade 5 » 7

Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently.

Compelling Question: How can students use multi-media to understand real-world issues?

Real World Issues: What is the relationship between our environment and living species (animals)? Students should be able to present a list of at least a few endangered species of animals and to explain that it is important to protect them from becoming extinct because the animals are part of the balanced cycle of life. If animals become extinct, because ....

Students will understand the critical need to use natural resources wisely and to practice conservation to protect our endangered animals and their environments as a result of completing the unit that will contain this lesson.

PROBLEMS: ELA teacher would need to know whether students have the knowledge needed to analyze informational text. Science: How is research in science applicable to real world issues?

Teachers: Linda Middleton & Diana Psyras

Learners: Students grades 3-6 (general education and special needs students)
Self: Linda Middleton, ELA Middle School Teacher, & Diana Psyras, Special Ed Elementary (grades 3-5). We both agree to importance of teaching our students to value the environment and to realize their personal effect on and their responsibility to protect their environment by conserving, recycling, and choosing green solutions. We also believe in the importance of our students learning to evaluate online information.
Context: ELA/Science/ Environmental/Animal Extinction
Community: Elementary & middle school grades 3-6 and their parents

PURPOSE
To inform students and their parents of the need to be aware of the importance of the environment to living species and to persuade them of the need to protect those species from extinction.

Standards: CCS 5:7 Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently.

Use your purpose, content, and pedagogical strategies to inform the design of your
TASK/ACTIVITY: (includes compelling question and possible scenarios to connect question to real world)

What is the relationship between the environment and living species? Which of these species are endangered? How can we protect them from becoming extinct? (Bold indicates questions addressed in this lesson plan.)

Students research, analyze, question, and discuss the concepts of extinction/endangered species and ways to help protect species from becoming extinct.

  1. Introduce unit by asking compelling question and showing Animoto sample video of final assignment: https://animoto.com/project/XdAxriBFt3cvyDJ2SmBHQw#, K-W-L, Vocabulary Review (Day 1)
  2. Present and explain student multimedia project to students. Digital Multi-media Collection Teacher Tool/Learning Environment - show to class Goorulearning.org http://bit.ly/11TL2zL, Update K-W-L. Review Vocabulary. (Day 2)
  3. Students revisit K-W-L Chart and question: What is the relationship between the environment and living species? Students discuss ways to research and to create a presentation showing animals that are in danger of extinction and actions they can take to protect them using more than one multimedia source using Digital Multi-media Collection Teacher Tool/Learning Environment. Present student multimedia project rubric to students (http://www.alienteacher.com/multimedia.htm).
. Show sample Endangered Species Animoto project to students.(Day 3)
  4. Students take notes on endangered species animal examples. (Day 4)
  5. Students learn to use Animoto and begin to create their presentations. (Day 5)
  6. Students complete creation of their presentations (or PSA) and practice presenting them to each other in teams. (Day 6)
  7. Students give their multi-media presentations (or PSAs) and complete two surveys: http://www.polleverywhere.com/my/polls#!/my/polls. Students present at home to their families. Families complete teacher-generated survey. (Day 7)

Please note:
Future lessons in the unit will address pollution, climate change, and the need to support recycling, to conserve natural resources, and to choose green solutions.

ASSESSMENT

Digital Multi-media Collection Teacher Tool/Learning Environment: Online quizzes.

Formative Assessment: Student Thinking Guide:
  1. Can you define the difference between a threatened animal and an endangered animal?
  2. Can you name one animal that is threatened and/or endangered and why?
  3. Do you have at least three important facts about the animal you researched? List the facts.
  4. What is your plan to get involved in responding to the need to become an active citizen in helping to prevent animal extinction?

Work Products: Visual presentation of endangered animals, their environments, and how to help prevent extinction.
Sample of student digital literacy products:
